2. Hand Building Project

During our second class, we learned the art of hand building with clay as well as a brief introduction to glazing. Above you see a 14.5″ vase created with white clay and green & blue glaze titled “Pour Me.” Approximately half way up the vase the piece the piece begins to shift inward with a decreased diameter. It then continues up until the top where a slight spout is formed. The glazes used were blue and green which were sponged on to create a unique pattern and to allow the purity of the white clay show through once it is fired.

This piece, “Pour Me,” is meant to be used to hold some form of liquid with flowers or something of the like, but to also have the viewer think. There is a calming and cooling emotion expressed in the color combination, but also a slight sense of chaos in the lack of a repeating pattern. Why should one “Pour Me?” Alice in Wonderland came across various foods and liquids labeled “eat me” or “drink me” and this piece could give the fairytale or magical connection that we see in the stories of Alice in Wonderland. This piece brings the viewer in to it’s space allowing for multiple perspectives and interpretations.
