5. Figure Project

Created in white clay is the presence of a woman standing on a large rock and leaning on a pillar. This woman props herself up with her left shoulder slightly raised and left leg bent forward and foot propped up on a small rock. Her right side is lower and you can see her right hip “popped” and in a semi sassy or powerful stance. Her head looks to her left as she goes off into the distance away from the viewer. Her torso is bare, but a large cloth or a blanket is draped across her lower body from the hips down with her feet barely peeking out.

A simple stances and lack facial expression can show so much power and so much beauty at the same time. This is a complicated emotion that is being depicted, but is a representation of a person’s spirit and perseverance. This sculpture is intended to have the viewer contemplate what is going on. Is the figure supposed to be someone who has reached a point of breaking? As she leans on the pillar is she tired and trying to hold herself up, or is she trying to hold something much bigger than herself up? The strength of a woman is at times overlooked and all that is observed may be her beauty or her outward appearance. Can there be more to the story?
