6. Final Project

The piece titled, When Two Doors Open, was created with white clay and underglazed with pink and brown tones. On top a flat rock like formation sits a door frame with a partially opened brown wooden door with a doormat at the entrance. The door also has a dog door at the bottom that is swinging open in the opposite direction of the viewer, towards the front. When you spin the piece 180 degrees to view the door as it opens towards the viewer drawing their focus to a large pink tongue that erupts from the dog door and curls outward.

This piece seems normal when looking at the front, but when you look at the back it is more of a fun and energetic. It could be expressing the feeling of “business in the front, party in the back” type emotion showing the serious exterior of someone and the true personality you find when you get to know a person. One always learns more about a person once they unlock their door and welcome others in. This piece could also represent the walls that people put up to guard themselves. A home is a safe place. People keep their true selves in and hide them from the outside. It could represent that once a person opens up to others, the words that slip off their tongue are out there forever. There is no going back and retreating to your safe zone because it is out there forever.
