Created for the Arduino Blinking Light Project, the Status Update is an interactive device composed of a white spinning wheel with five colored translucent circles equally spaced and backed by a blinking LED. This is either attached to clothing or worn around a person’s neck. When the device is spun by the wearer, it will change to one of the five color options. The color options on the devices are (in order) green, blue, yellow, orange and red.
The Status Update is representative of a person’s health and if they need to have a break/substitute from a sporting event or that they are being pushed too hard in training. By emitting light, it sends a signal to someone in the distance whether it be on the sideline, or on the other side of a room. Each color will light up and signify a person’s self described status to signify others the wearers health status and potential need for assistance. The devices could also be a tool for those that are unable to use words because of a disability or hospitalization to signify how they are feeling similar to the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Rating Scale, but with a light so that it can be seen from a distance.
